Gleneagles, the luxury getaway retreat in Perthshire, Scotland is at the centre of a food poisoning outbreak. Over 100 guests have been affected by a sickness and diarrhoea bug, suspected to be an outbreak of ‘The Norovirus’.
Gleneagles were made aware of the outbreak after a number of staff, guests and residents reported their sickness after leaving the retreat.

A solicitors firm has set up a hotline for those affected to help them reclaim any medical expenses or loss of earnings incurred. One of the lawyers involved in the case has expects the food poisoning compensation claims to exceed £200,000. This figure is based on the understanding that gastric illnesses ruin holidays and can lead to serious health consequences.
Tests have been carried out by environmental health officers to try and determine the source of the outbreak. It is understood that the incidents are limited to the hotel’s golf clubhouse. There is speculation that the virus could have been brought in by a guest. Perth and Kinross council is also working to try and implement extra hygiene measures to prevent any further illness.
The Norovirus is the most common form of food poisoning in the UK and is linked to contaminated food or water. It can also be transmitted through hand contact, contaminated surfaces and objects. It is estimated to affect between 600,000 and 1 million people each year.

A spokesman from the NHS who has been treating the victims reported that most victims had recovered and were now back to full health. Only a very small number of victims are still sick. He also urged anyone who has been in contact with Gleneagles over the past week to remain on top of their hand hygiene and to stay at home for the next 48 hours.
Gleneagles reports that only a small number of guests were affected and that they are taking all necessary precautions to control the situation. The business is now running as usual.
